As with so many things in life, we come to using Ropes in Yoga for many different reasons. Some use the support to come into alignment in poses too physically challenging done unassisted, others because of health issues and others for the deeper work in asanas the support and flexibility of the ropes affords. I came to use ropes as a result of chronic lower back pain which regularly left me unable to do the simplest daily tasks.

After a particularly painful episode involving Paripurna Navasana, my teacher Joan White, helped me rehabilitate and discover more about my body. In this process, I found inverting with the support of ropes extremely beneficial. As the months went on I struggled with tying and untying ropes, the rope and blanket-padding and various pelvic swings. I felt like Goldilocks! One was to harsh, one to soft and the hooking and unhooking for various poses a general nightmare. Somewhere was the thought that it could be easier, stronger and more flexible.

After years of experimentation I came up with the design for the Sacral Web. As I had envisioned it the Sacral Web combines the attributes of Long Rope and Pelvic Swing into one. Many have found it 'Just Right' and loved it immediately! I trust that after using the Sacral Web you too will find it a versatile and useful prop in your studio.

When I was developing the Sacral Web, I spent hours hanging upside down, twisting and turning, experimenting with various designs and ideas. All of this was supported by the experiences over eight years in working with ropes taught to me by certified teachers. For more on teachers, consult the Iyengar National Association of the US (IYNAUS).

Kurunta is the Sanskrit word for puppet, or doll made of wood. In using these ropes we become like puppets in our practice of yoga suspended by ropes. If you'd like more information, a booklet is available (it's by Chris Saudek and listed towards the end of the page). The Sacral Web, and ropes in general, should only be used under the guidance of a well-trained Iyengar yoga teacher. Sacral Web is in no way responsible for any injury that might result from the attempt of anything using this prop.
